A Xiaomi plant in Wuhan runs 120,000 data collection nodes.
A CVSS 9.2 in the Modicon M580
Schneider Electric published four new advisories on September 9 and updated four others, one dating to 2019. The headline item is an incorrect implementation of an authentication algorithm in Modicon M580 and M580 Safety controllers, CVE-2026-3869, CVSS v4.0 9.2. Every M580 below application level 4.00 is affected, every M580 Safety below 4.20 (SecurityWeek, Sept 9, 2026).
Siemens published nine new advisories, seven on September 8, four critical: Reyrolle 7SR5, the Open Interface Services module in Siveillance Control, Industrial Edge Management, and SIMOVE Fleetmanager. The Industrial Edge Management flaw lets an unauthenticated attacker force a password reset and take over any account. AVEVA and Rockwell shipped nine advisories each.
What it means for HMI buyers: Your panel sits on the same segment as the controller and often runs Windows 11 IoT LTSC or Linux, which is what the Copy Fail kernel bug targets. Nobody patches a safety controller during a live process, so the practical control is reachability. Ask your integrator whether the panel needs that route to the PLC at all.
One robot off the line every ten minutes
UBTech's industrial humanoid super factory went into production in Liuzhou on September 12: 14,000 square metres, the Walker S and Cruzr lines, one finished robot every 10 minutes, planned capacity above 10,000 a year. Siemens replicated the whole workshop in Plant Simulation, AGVs included, and the Yanshee MOM system the two built together handles scheduling, material delivery, quality monitoring and warehousing. Each unit carries over 2,000 screws in more than 50 specifications, matched by a smart tightening system that retains torque data, and every robot gets a serial number for lifetime traceability (Guangxi regional government, Sept 12, 2026; Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, Sept 14, 2026).
What it means for HMI buyers: The product is a robot, and the process record is part of it. Torque values, test logs and serial traces have to surface where a person can read them, which in a plant building thousands of units means a screen at the station as often as a dashboard in the office.
Montreal: closing the demo-to-floor gap
Vention, an industrial automation platform company in Montreal, opened a physical AI lab there on September 9, led by Dr Jimmy Li with Dr Joelle Pineau of Cohere as external adviser. Eight researchers now, more than 16 roles open, working on motion planning, vision foundation models, learning from demonstration and reinforcement learning. The commercial bridge is GRIIP, a modular pipeline for scene digitization, object segmentation, pose estimation, grasp selection and collision-free motion planning; a public SDK is planned. Vention reports 28,000-plus machines across 6,000 factories, 90 of them Fortune 500, and says physical AI revenue is up 400% year on year (Robotics & Automation News, Sept 10, 2026).
What it means for HMI buyers: The pitch is not about the models. A manufacturer buys fewer engineering hours, faster commissioning, less scrap, and a recovery routine an ordinary technician can follow. That last one lands on the panel: a pipeline that misses a pick every so often needs an exception workflow a shift operator can run at 2 a.m.
120,000 data nodes on the shop floor
Xiaomi's appliance plant in Wuhan runs 65 AI vision inspection systems and 120,000 data collection nodes across its main lines, covering process, logistics and assembly parameters. One air conditioner comes off the line every 6.5 seconds and first-pass yield is above 99% (People's Daily via Sina, Sept 11, 2026).
The same day, Xinhua reported that China's own-brand industrial robots now cover 253 industry categories, more than half the national total, and that 2025 exports rose 48.7% to overtake imports for the first time. At the Shenyang industrial internet conference, Siasun's president described robots that use vision and touch to work out how far to extend an arm and how hard to grip, instead of being hand-coded (Xinhua via Overseas Net, Sept 11, 2026).
What it means for HMI buyers: A plant with 120,000 data nodes has already solved the expensive half of an HMI project. The data exists; what remains is presentation and write-back, which is where a panel spec gets decided.
All four land on the same network segment: the controller, the robot, the vision model and the quality record, with an operator at the end of each one. Schneider's 9.2 is the risk that convergence carries. Liuzhou and Wuhan are what it buys.
